A Music Together® special needs class includes special needs children and their typical-ability siblings, generally ages 0-6 years, with full involvement of parents or other primary care giver. We maintain that all children are musical and that the participation of parents or other primary caregivers is essential to their music development. In this class, a Music Together-trained teacher with experience working with special needs children will guide families through developmentally appropriate music activities. The mixed-age class-setting, similar to our other offerings, removes age-specific expectations for participation and developmental level. Anything the child offers in class in the way of participation and interaction will be accepted and included.
Although we support and encourage music-making for music’s sake, the musical experiences in class may also support development in other areas, such as language development, sequencing, social/emotional, cognitive, and motor development. The community environment of the class allows children to be together without performance or social pressure to respond in a certain way. Parents/caregivers will meet other families with special needs children and have the opportunity to network and share ideas. This class will be a place where different ideas and suggestions will be welcomed and families will work together to provide a rich musical environment for their children. At the same time, the individual needs of each child will be considered and attended to in the classes.
