The Disability Rights Center of Kansas (DRC), formerly Kansas Advocacy & Protective Services (KAPS), is a public interest legal advocacy agency empowered by federal law to advocate for the civil and legal rights of Kansans with disabilities. DRC is the Official Protection and Advocacy System for Kansas and is a part of the national network of federally mandated and funded protection and advocacy systems. As such, DRC advocates for the rights of Kansans with disabilities under state or federal laws (ADA, the Rehabilitation Act, Federal Medicaid Act, Kansas Act Against Discrimination, etc.)

Equal Chance Education Consulting, LLC (EC²) is dedicated to providing solutions and support to parents of children with special needs through qualified advocacy, education and legal services. EC²’s philosophy is simple: facilitate direct and constructive communication between parents and school districts that focuses on the child’s needs and works to provide that child with an opportunity for success within the current legal framework. Nancy Huerta, Esq., founder, and owner of EC², has practiced special education law since 1994. She is an honors graduate of Harvard University and the University of Chicago Law School and is currently completing her Master’s in special education with an emphasis on behavior disorders and autism at the University of Kansas. Ms. Huerta recently co-authored the handbook, IDEA As Amended in 2004 (Turnbull, Huerta and Stowe) and a special education textbook, Free Appropriate Public Education: Law and the Education of Children with Disabilities, (Turnbull, Stowe and Huerta).

The Protection and Advocacy (P&A) System are congressionally mandated, legally-based disability rights agencies. P&A agencies have the authority to provide legal representation and other advocacy services, under all federal and state laws, to all people with disabilities (based on a system of priorities for services). All P&As maintain a presence in facilities that care for people with disabilities, where they monitor, investigate and attempt to remedy adverse conditions. These agencies also devote considerable resources to ensuring full access to inclusive educational programs, financial entitlements, health care, accessible housing and productive employment opportunities.

Protection & advocacy

The Kansas Bar Association (KBA) was founded in 1882 as a voluntary association for dedicated legal professionals and has more than 6,500 members, including lawyers, judges, law students, and paralegals.

The LAW OFFICE OF W. CHRISTOPHER HODGE provides disability advocacy and legal services to disabled adults and children through out all of Western-Missouri. Representation before the U.S. Social Security Administration may include the Eastern-Kansas.

The Missouri Developmental Disability Resource Center (MODDRC) is one center that provides three levels of support. Whether you want to become more informed, get connected, or find ways to volunteer, MODDRC offers a network of support options to get you started and support you throughout your journey.
