The Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities was created to represent the interests of employees with disabilities in Kentucky state government. The Council advocates for the rights of state employees with disabilities. It also serves as a resource for state agencies on disability-related issues. The Council achieves its goals through education and legislation.

With just a few clicks, the site provides access to disability-related information and programs available across the government on numerous subjects, including benefits, civil rights, community life, education, employment, housing, health, technology and transportation.

The mission of the Division of Mental Retardation (DMR) is to take the lead, in partnership with other key stakeholders, in building the capacity of communities and systems to provide individually determined supports for individuals with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities, and their families, that increase their opportunities for choice and inclusion as valued citizens of Kentucky's communities.

The Story of Easter Seals Easter Seals has been helping individuals with disabilities and special needs, and their families, live better lives for more than 80 years. Whether helping someone improve physical mobility, return to work or simply gain greater independence for everyday living, Easter Seals offers a variety of services to help people with disabilities address life's challenges and achieve personal goals.

Parent centers in each state provide training and information to parents of infants, toddlers, school-aged children, and young adults with disabilities and the professionals who work with their families. This assistance helps parents participate more effectively with professionals in meeting the educational needs of children and youth with disabilities. Parent centers are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

Governmental Agency

State agency; The Kentucky Department of Education is a service agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The department provides resources and guidance to Kentucky's public schools and districts as they implement the state's K-12 education requirements. The department also serves as the state liaison for federal education requirements and funding opportunities.

The Kentucky Council on Developmental Disabilities, the Kentucky University Center for Excellence (the Interdisciplinary Human Development Institute), and Kentucky Protection and Advocacy are collectively gathering input from consumers, family members, service providers, and policy makers to determine the primary issues affecting the lives of people with disabilities in Kentucky.

The Protection and Advocacy (P&A) System are congressionally mandated, legally-based disability rights agencies. P&A agencies have the authority to provide legal representation and other advocacy services, under all federal and state laws, to all people with disabilities (based on a system of priorities for services). All P&As maintain a presence in facilities that care for people with disabilities, where they monitor, investigate and attempt to remedy adverse conditions. These agencies also devote considerable resources to ensuring full access to inclusive educational programs, financial entitlements, health care, accessible housing and productive employment opportunities.
