The Council focuses on persons who experience a severe disability that occurs before the individual attains the age of 22, which includes persons with physical disabilities, mental/behavioral health conditions and persons that are served by the current state developmental disabilities system. The Council awards grants to various agencies to address gaps and barriers in the system. |

The incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is increasing nationally and Nebraska is no exception. In the late 1990s, educators and parents requested the Special Populations Office of the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) to take a lead role in assisting school districts in providing appropriate services for students with ASD. |
