More than 10 national autism leadership organizations have come together to form AutismCares, a nationwide disaster relief effort that will potentially assist thousands of Katrina families living with autism. To address the most immediate needs, ”AutismCares – Katrina” is coordinating support for the unique needs of families affected by autism through facilitating temporary / permanent relocation support, mobilizing specialty assistance teams and providing autism-conscious supplies directly to these families and the professionals caring for them.

Parents and educators working together to improve educational opportunities for children with disabilities. FEET sponsors trainings fo rparents and educators, sidtributes a newsletter, provides parents as mentors, purchases books and videos for the public library, etc.

The North Dakota Family to Family Network is a support network based on the philosophy that parents who have successfully adapted to their children's disabilities or special health care needs, are the best support for other parents of children with special needs. The Family to Family match provides emotional support and understanding, shared experiences, and support in accessing resources. It is designed to be broad based, to serve children with all types of disabilities and special health care needs and their families, and accommodate the needs of families in rural environments.

Family Voices, a national grassroots network of families and friends, advocates for health care services that are family-centered, community-based, comprehensive, coordinated and culturally competent for all children and youth with special health care needs; promotes the inclusion of all families as decision makers at all levels of health care; and supports essential partnerships between families and professionals Family Voices was founded in 1992 by family leaders concerned about the changing health care environment and the implications for oour children with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and other special health care needs. Based in New Mexico, Family Voices has developed an extensive network of state and regional coordinators all of whom are family members of children with special health care needs (CSHCN)--and has a formal state chapter in a number of states including North Dakota. The network leaders work with families and professionals at the local, state and national level to improve health care and related services for children.

Due to the fact that the majority of families, the public, including professionals in the medical, educational, and vocational fields, are still unaware of how autism affects people and how to work effectively with individuals with autism, each member shall have but one purpose and that will be to help families of children with autism, and those who work with them. We shall do this by encouragement ... understanding ... providing resources ... welcoming and giving comfort to ALL families, and professionals regardless of their race, ethnic, social boundaries, income, lifestyles and education level. Giving comfort means, we will share our experiences ... listen ... offer friendship ... resources ... and allow ALL newcomers to learn what services are available to help themselves, their families, and those working with them.
