ABC of NC is a private, not-for-profit, research-based provider of quality educational and behavioral services for young children with autism spectrum disorder. The organization uses the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) within a caring environment to help children develop their full potential. The center uses a curriculum and teaching techniques derived from the principles of behavioral psychology. The application of this science is called applied behavior analysis (ABA). Our philosophy is to teach children skills, beginning with basics and moving on to more sophisticated, by creating an environment that motivates them to talk and play with their teachers/tutors and then to transfer these skills as soon as possible to peers, siblings and other adults. We employ a variety of behavioral teaching strategies such as discrete trial training, verbal behavior, natural environment training, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and fluency training. All teaching methods are science based (i.e., proven effective) and individually tailored to the needs of the child. |

I provide program consulting services to families and schools for children with ASD ages 2 through 21 with nine years professional experience. I emphasize the importance of service delivery in the least restrictive setting and data-driven teaching in an ABA format. My focus is on lasting portable and pivotal skills that can be used across environments to increase communication, social, and play skills as these are reciprocal and vital to the development of all learners. I consult to schools on ways to support children with challenging behaviors and assist teams in writing behavior support plans based on functional behavioral assessments. I have a Masters and teaching certification in Sp. Ed.(concentration in severe behavior disorders) and 46 credits toward a Ph.D. in Special Education. I co-taught the autism graduate course at Lehigh University for four years. I'm also an adjunct professor at Arcadia University teaching graduate classes in low incidence disabilities, and behavioral approaches. Finally, or before everything else, I am the parent of a 15 yr. old with autism. |

|
The Discrete Trial (DT) Trainer, based on the Discrete Trial methodology in Applied Behavioral Analysis, was created to teach individuals with autism. However, since the software is highly configurable, the DT Trainer can teach a wide range of developmental levels. The current content limits the developmental range from about 2 to 8 years old. School districts currently use the DT Trainer with a large percentage of non-autistic children as compared to children with an autism spectrum disorder. In fact school districts are also interested in using the DT Trainer with preschool, at risk, and English as a second language populations. |
