AUCD formerly UAP(University Affiliated Programs) are authorized by federal legislation to help States and local communities respond to the needs of people with developmental disabilities and their families.(AUCDs) serve as a liaison between the academic world and the developmental disabilities service delivery system. AUCDs network with and provide assistance to State Agencies, their local affiliates, and to various nongovermental consumer-based organizations. Most AUCDs provide direct clinical, educational, and other services to individuals and families, or can assist families in finding services.

Children's Care Hospital & School, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is the state's only children's hospital. It is a private, non-profit facility licensed by the South Dakota Department of Health. Last year, Children's Care Hospital & School served over 2200 children from birth to age 21 in South Dakota and surrounding states. This program provides children with significant developmental delays.

Children's Special Health Services is funded through the federal Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant and state matching funds, and administered by the South Dakota Department of Health. Its goal is to improve health care services for South Dakota children with special health care needs. Pediatric specialists, the primary care physician, registered nurses, social workers, and dietitians work together to provide diagnostic, consultative, and care coordination services. This team works closely with the child's family to help them meet the child's needs. Financial assistance is also available for specified conditions and procedures on a cost-share basis according to family size and income, utilizing the federal poverty guidelines.

For an eligible child or adult, a family may receive authorization to receive up to $550.00 of Respite Care services; with $200.00 for each additional eligible child or adult, up to a maximum of $950.00 per family, per year (June 1-May 31). The family selects a provider and uses the Request For Payment form to purchase Respite Care Services. The provider receives reimbursement by submitting the Request For Payment form to the Department of Human Services Respite Care Program.

The state of South Dakota participates in a federal program called the Early Intervention Program for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities (Part C). In South Dakota we call this program Birth to Three Connections. Respite care can range from a few hours of care provided on a one-time basis to overnight or extended care sessions. Respite care can be utilized on a regular or irregular basis and can be provided by family members, friends, skilled care providers or professionals.
