A nationally recognized program created by Richard Solomon MD and based on the DIR theory of Stanley Greenspan MD. Our program is designed to teach parents play-based, intensive intervention techniques that are very successful in helping young children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) gain language and social skills. The Utah Autism Research Program conducts research into various possible causes of autism spectrum disorders. Some of our current projects include: genetic studies utilizing the unique genealogical resources available in Utah; studies of brain development in children with autism; and studies of the immune system in autism. This research is critical to our understanding of the causes and, ultimately, the successful treatments for autism spectrum disorders. In addition to our own work, our program is part of a nationwide network of nine University-based research programs called the Collaborative Programs of Excellence in Autism. This network is funded by various departments of the National Institutes of Health, and was created to help facilitate larger studies than are possible at any single university.
