|
ACME Together (Autistic Children's Movies and Entertainment Together) is a Not-for-Profit organization that arranges events at a variety of theaters, restaurants and other venues in the DC Metro Area. Designed for children with Autism and other related "spectrum" disorders, ACME events are opportunities for children and their families to meet others in a low-pressure social situation. Children are encouraged to play, interact with each other and express themselves freely, as are adults, without the "social expectations" of a non-autism spectrum setting. The costs for all events are covered by a small fee, and any funds above that are used to sponsor future events, or are donated to a charitable organization.

In 1992, working out of our home, we started a network to assist parents and professionals to learn more about autism and hearing/visual impairment, and in 1993 the network was adopted as a formal committee of the Autism Society of America. Our goals in this data bank project are to establish a network for communication, education, research, and advocacy for those with autism combined with a hearing or visual disability, and encourage the development of centers to diagnose and evaluate individuals with these disorders. We need to know if there are programs making a positive impact with this "syndrome", and if not, how we can make them happen. Educating physicians in the community and presenting educational sessions at the ASA National Conference each year round out the objectives we hope to attain through the project.

By acting as a clearinghouse of community service information and resources, participating in legislative advocacy, facilitating prevention awareness, hosting educational programs and encouraging research, the Brain Injury Association of America and its affiliates work to reach the millions of individuals living with the silent epidemic of brain injury. The Brain Injury Association of America's Family Helpline receives approximately 15,000 calls each year from individuals with brain injury, family members and providers seeking assistance, education and support. The Family Helpline is, for many, the first point of contact and support during the tumultuous times following a brain injury. The trained Information and Resources Department, who manages the Family Helpline, provides resources to individuals involved in brain injury.
