The Arc also collaborates with other agencies to meet the needs of people with mental retardation. The Arc is a grassroots organization formed in 1950 by a small group of parents and other concerned individuals. Today there are 160,000 members and over 1,400 state and local chapters across the nation.

More than 10 national autism leadership organizations have come together to form AutismCares, a nationwide disaster relief effort that will potentially assist thousands of Katrina families living with autism. To address the most immediate needs, ”AutismCares – Katrina” is coordinating support for the unique needs of families affected by autism through facilitating temporary / permanent relocation support, mobilizing specialty assistance teams and providing autism-conscious supplies directly to these families and the professionals caring for them.

The Parent Information Center (PIC), a project of Parents Helping Parents of Wyoming Inc., opened in August, 1991 as one of the nationwide network of nonprofit, Parent Training and Information Centers (PTI's) funded by the United States Department of Education. Our first responsibility is to inform and educate parents about special education law and the rights and responsibilities they and their child have under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The main goals and purposes of PIC are to help families better understand education issues as they relate to their child's disability, and to provide support and encouragement to parents as they face their child's journey through life.
