To serve as an advocate for Alabama's citizens with developmental disabilities and their families; to empower them with the knowledge and opportunity to make informed choices and exercise control over their own lives; and to create a climate for positive social change to enable them to be respected, independent and productive integrated members of society.

The Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services' (ADRS) mission is to enable Alabama's children and adults with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential. We are the only state agency in the country that offers a comprehensive array of medical, educational, psychological, vocational, technological and independent living services for children and adults with disabilities from birth through old age. ADRS is comprised of seven major divisions: Computer Services, Accounting and Purchasing, Human Resources, Legal, Early Intervention System, Children's Rehabilitation Service and Vocational Rehabilitation Service. Special Education Services provides technical assistance to all education agencies serving Alabama's gifted children, as well as children with disabilities. SES is also responsible for ensuring that education agencies providing services are in compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations and for processing all complaints and requests for due process hearings and mediation regarding special education issues.

ADvocate/ Consultant/Service Provider for Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism

Children’s Rehabilitation Service ( CRS ) is a statewide organization of skilled professionals providing quality medical, rehabilitative, coordination and support services for children with special health care needs and their families. Every county in Alabama is served through a network of 15 community-based offices. This network provides specialty clinic and other services by physicians, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, occupational therapists, registered dietitians, secretaries, and administrators.

Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) is a state and federally funded program housed within ADRS. VRS provides specialized employment services and training to help Alabamians with disabilities get and keep jobs. We also provide general vocational rehabilitation information for all Alabamians.

Our mission is to serve the people of Alabama by regulating the insurance and pre-need industries, providing consumer protection, promoting market stability, enforcing fire prevention standards, and conducting investigations.

Helping Alabamians with disabilities achieve independence through employment is the goal of Vocational Rehabilitation Service (VRS).

Coordinating a statewide system of identification of and access to appropriate technology is the objective of STAR, and it is another program within the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. STAR guides Alabamians with disabilities through the process of locating, acquiring and learning how to use technology to assist them at work, school, play, and in everyday living.

With computers and special technology in the Resource Center, with Consumer Action Teams and through the Lending Library, T.A.S.C. has helped children and adults who have physical, visual, hearing, and cognitive impairments, as well as learning disabilities, become more independent and productive.
