The Irlen Method has been effective in reducing or eliminating perceptual distortions which plague those who suffer from PDD conditions. The method asks for a parental inventory, some preliminary contact to familiarize the affected person with the environment, and work with filters (colored lenses) to promote focus and decrease stemming behaviors. As a parent of a child who was diagnosed with Severe Autism with Mental Retardation who, by the way, was multiplying and reading by the age of 5 (and lost the diagnosis of "severe" to "high functioning")...she believes anything is possible for the child with a spectrum disorder.
