The Bureau of Mental Retardation has the primary responsibility for the development and implementation of services to meet the needs of individuals with mental retardation/developmental disabilities.

The purpose of the Office of Special Education (OSE) is to support local schools and districts in their efforts to provide effective educational programs to students with disabilities, ages 3-21, who are in need of special education and other services neccessary to enable them to benefit from instruction as provided for in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and state law.

The Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities is a body of advocates, appointed by the Governor, who promote quality of life for people with developmental disabilities, their families, and the community at large. Improvement in quality of life is provided through initiatives that have potential for replication, thus creating systemic change.”

The Department of Mental Health provides a network of opportunities to persons who experience problems with mental illness, alcohol and/or drug abuse/dependence, or who have mental retardation or developmental disabilities. Services are provided through an array of facilities and agencies operated and/or funded by the Department of Mental Health.

It is the mission of the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services to provide appropriate and comprehensive services to Mississippians with disabilities in a timely and effective manner.

The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is the state's public program that helps people with physical and mental disabilities obtain or retain employment. Its mission is to provide opportunities and resources to eligible individuals with disabilities, leading to success in employment and independent living.
