Autism Speaks is dedicated to helping families find answers, through funding research and education efforts and, most significantly, by spearheading the development of a national registry of autism patients. The lack of such a registry makes research all the more difficult and costly. We are committed to assembling a significant central database of children with autism that will provide, for the first time, the standardized medical records that researchers need to conduct accurate clinical trials. We believe this will facilitate the large-scale studies and clinical trials that will improve the effectiveness of treatment and eventually help lead us to a cure.

The Facilitated Communication Institute conducts research, training, and public education designed to expand opportunities for people with disabilities to be heard and to participate fully in society. Faculty, staff and students at Syracuse University founded the Institute in 1992; its purpose is to focus attention on individuals with developmental disabilities who have traditionally been silenced as a result of their own communication disabilities and by social policy and human service practices that ignore their communication potential.

Facilitated Communication is an alternative means of expression for people who cannot speak or whose speech is highly limited (echoed, limited to one or a few word utterances) and who cannot point reliably.

The Seaver and New York Autism Center of Excellence, funded by a major grant from the Seaver Foundation since 1993, is dedicated to unraveling the biological causes of autism and related disorders, and developing effective treatments for autism.

The Center's interdisciplinary approach to the study of autism includes family/genetic studies, brain imaging studies, and biological, autoimmune, neuropsychiatric, psychosocial, and medication treatment studies. The Center offers an integrated series of unique programs ranging from clinical care to neurobiology to genetic studies. Our commitment to understanding autism ranges from the whole family and continues through the very molecules that make up genes.

In 2003, the Center was named a Center of Excellence by the NIH and awarded a grant as part of the Studies to Advance Autism Research and Treatment (STAART) Centers Program initiative. Mount Sinai is one of the eight centers in the program. STAART aims to advance knowledge in understanding and treatment of autism through collaborative projects, such as multisite clinical trials.
