Autism Speaks is dedicated to helping families find answers, through funding research and education efforts and, most significantly, by spearheading the development of a national registry of autism patients. The lack of such a registry makes research all the more difficult and costly. We are committed to assembling a significant central database of children with autism that will provide, for the first time, the standardized medical records that researchers need to conduct accurate clinical trials. We believe this will facilitate the large-scale studies and clinical trials that will improve the effectiveness of treatment and eventually help lead us to a cure.

The Facilitated Communication Institute conducts research, training, and public education designed to expand opportunities for people with disabilities to be heard and to participate fully in society. Kid Esteem is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the emotional and social vitality of children, families, schools and communities. We accomplish this by offering a variety of programs, workshops and classes that focus on the development of emotional intelligence, social skills, self-esteem, behavior management and family life skills. We also provide training for teachers and students on integrating these concepts into the academic curriculum, creating an essential learning tool that engages a fundamentally more powerful learning process.

With the generous support of the Seaver Foundation, the Family Studies Research Program works with Mount Sinai's Seaver Program for the Research in Autism. In an effort to identify a genetic linkage marker in autism, we are actively recruiting families where multiple members have autism or related disorders.

The Center's interdisciplinary approach to the study of autism includes family/genetic studies, brain imaging studies, and biological, autoimmune, neuropsychiatric, psychosocial, and medication treatment studies. The Center offers an integrated series of unique programs ranging from clinical care to neurobiology to genetic studies. Our commitment to understanding autism ranges from the whole family and continues through the very molecules that make up genes.

In 2003, the Center was named a Center of Excellence by the NIH and awarded a grant as part of the Studies to Advance Autism Research and Treatment (STAART) Centers Program initiative. Mount Sinai is one of the eight centers in the program. STAART aims to advance knowledge in understanding and treatment of autism through collaborative projects, such as multisite clinical trials.
