The Center on Human Development and Disability (CHDD) at the University of Washington makes important contributions to the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families, through a comprehensive array of research, clinical services, training, community outreach, and dissemination activities. AUCD formerly UAP(University Affiliated Programs) are authorized by federal legislation to help States and local communities respond to the needs of people with developmental disabilities and their families.(AUCDs) serve as a liaison between the academic world and the developmental disabilities service delivery system. AUCDs network with and provide assistance to State Agencies, their local affiliates, and to various nongovermental consumer-based organizations. Most AUCDs provide direct
clinical, educational, and other services to individuals and families, or can assist families in finding services.

Dr. Harrell, FRIPH is a researcher in the field of sleep medicine and autism. His doctoral degree is in molecular biology; he is not a medical doctor. Harrell serves as Innovation Research Director and as such is investigating new technologies 5 to 10 years down the road. Additionally, Harrell is pursuing a second doctorate, this time in the field of public health-epidemiology. Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) are both growing public health concerns. Harrell is researching sleep problems in children with ASD. Of specific interest are: (1) sleep fragmentation in children with ASD as well as other members of the household; (2) public health and epidemiology of sleep disorders (SD) and sleep problems (SP), especially in those with ASD; (3) molecular activity of SDs and SPs in ASD; (4) social and behavioral dimensions of SDs and SPs in ASD and other members of the household; (5) autonomic activity relating to SDs and SPs.

My passion is to help build foundational social skills and cognitive language development abilities with children (K-12th grade) diagnosed ASD, PDD-nos. I provide evidence-based practices in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) under the direction of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Extensive experience with Verbal/Non-verbal populations on the spectrum, and across cultures. Treatment interventions include empirically supported strategies of Discrete Trial Training, Incidental Naturalistic Learning Opportunities and Positive Behavioral Modification Support. I implement a highly structured, 1:1 learning intensive to help strengthen skills in: language (expressive and receptive), visual perception, communication, academics, play, fine and large motor skills, imitation, self-help and social-emotional regulation in sessions and generalizing across environments. Treatment plans and program goals modified periodically per directives of family and professional team members. Equine Facilitated Learning sessions (mounted or unmounted activities) available upon request.

Judith Bluestone, recipient of the 2004 Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award, founded the HANDLE Institute in 1994 to provide an effective, non-drug alternative for identifying and treating most neurodevelopmental disorders across the lifespan.

HANDLE® incorporates research and techniques from many disciplines. It includes principles and perspectives from medicine, rehabilitation, psychology, education and nutrition. It is founded on an interactive, developmental model of human functioning. The HANDLE Institute International, LLC offers clinical services, community information, and professional training programs. The Institute works with people of all ages who have learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, etc.), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, autism and pervasive developmental disorders, visual/perceptual/motor dysfunctions, behavior disorders, apraxia and dyspraxia, memory and organizational disorders, aphasia and other language disorders, and Tourette’s Syndrome.

The main facility is located in Seattle, Washington. HANDLE satellite clinics serve various neurodevelopmental needs and different geographical regions. There are currently Practitioners and Screeners across the United States, in Europe and South Africa.

TACA holds monthly meetings in many locations throughout the United States that feature educational speakers on important topics and allow family members to connect with one another and stay on top of the latest information in the autism world. Each TACA group maintains a resource library of the latest autism books and tapes that can be checked out by members at no charge. Free journey guides are provided to new families.

Our Washington team offers free monthly meetings at Bates Technical College (South Campus) in Tacoma providing support opportunities for families throughout the Puget Sound community.

The UW Center for Technology and Disability Studies is an interdisciplinary program focusing on research, education, advocacy and information systems related to assistive technology and accessible information systems.
