First off I would like to point out I have never actually spoken to or seen any of psychologists at the office. I can only rate my review based off my experiences with the office staff. Right now as I type this my insurance is investigating their practices and I'm looking into somehow informing the psychologists there about how my family has been treated. I found the Edelson & Associates office off of an autism website to try and help my son get a diagnosis or a better understanding of what delays he does have. His preschool, his pediatrician, and myself have noticed significant delays for his age and were wanting a psychologist to do a full evaluation to see if it could possibly be an autism spectrum disorder. I contacted the office and got an appointment and then contacted my insurance company to make sure everything was covered. Our insurance company has been great with the speech evaluations we've had in the past and were very helpful in getting everything ready for this evaluation with the psychologist. The insurance representative made sure to note our account with everything that was going on and sent us any information with our coverage explanations and also let us know that we would only be responsible for our $15 copay. A week before the appointment I call to double check with the office cause I hadn't received the information packet they had told me they were sending out to us. The office manager said it would be sent out soon and then informed me we would have to pay a $150 deductible the day of the evaluation. I said they must be mistaken and said our insurance already double checked everything to make sure the evaluation was 100% covered with no deductible. She in turn turned me over to their insurance billing representative, Libby. Libby informed me that this was not covered under our mental health insurance and that this would be billed to our medical insurance. And if I wanted a mental health screening, which autism is, then I would have to find someone else cause they would not do it! I was in shock and did not understand at all why she was billing it this way and also not tell us this a month ago when we first made the appointment! I contacted both our medical insurance and our mental insurance carriers to double check with what she was saying since they had both said different when I first spoke to them. They both informed me that they had never been contacted by the office and their only contact about this appointment had been from myself when I had called in to begin with. Both insurance carriers contacted Libby, the insurance rep, to try and get the insurance coding on how she was billing this and she was very rude to them apparently and refused to bill it through the mental carrier even though they both said that was the correct way. She also subsequently lied saying that they were an out of network provider for our mental insurance carrier as well. The insurance carriers contacted me and the office eventually contacted me and we are in the process of trying to find another psychologist that can help us. When the office manager did contact me she wanted to know if I would like to pay the full charge for the evaluation, $900, but I would have to sign a contract saying I wouldn't file for the insurance myself to reimburse me the charges. I told her no thank you and that I was still completely confused about their office acting the way they have on this insurance billing. All in all I'm glad now that I don't have to deal with the office but I'm very upset that we've had to go through all this trouble and waiting for nothing. I don't know if anything will come of the insurance investigation but we'll see. I just wanted to post this so hopefully another parent would see it and not be misled by the office to come in pay their deductible and then find out they're responsible for the remaining $750 or so because they won't bill your insurance correctly!
