My son was seen at this clinic for over 3 years and we continued to have difficulties to get anywhere with the staff. There was always a different doctor that was in rotation which made it very difficult for my son to get the care or services he needed. I received a generic diagnosis for my son of ADHD/ADD with possible Nonverbal learning disorder. I continued to allow these doctors to prescribe my son medications and asked multiple times if they thought it was possibly Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism and the response I received he smiles and laughs and he talks. He has lots of signs that he very much so has Asperger's syndrome yet they are so stuck on that generic diagnosis that they are unable to see past that. If you choose to go to this clinic for your child's care please be well advised that you are educated with what you want from the staff there and question everything. I wasted precious time that my son had to endure unhappiness. Totally unfair to the child.

While my husband and I found the staff at the I of U to be very pleasant as well as honest with regards to what they are responsible for (evaluation and suggestions) and what they are not responsible (treatments), the idea of Autism as a diagnosis for our 4 year old son was completely missed. We only received a "tentative adhd" diagnosis. A couple of years later, after finally receiving the correct diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, and the all encompassing research that most parents bury themselves in after a diagnosis is made, I spent some time reading and re-reading the evaluation reports contucted through the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services for my son. I was amazed and shocked at the number of red flags for Autism were missed. Knowing what I know of Autism, I simply can not understand how they did not see nor did they ever suggest the possibility of an ASD. Had we obtained this diagnosis earlier our son could have begun treatment at a much younger age. We were stuck in that old he can't be treated without a diagnosis cycle. And because of this delay, he fell further behind in his language processing skills, thus making it much harder for him at age 9 to learn the skills that most just take for granted. As far as the U of Iowa's Child & Adolescent Psych goes, I would recommend either avoiding this clinic all together, or if un-avoidable be sure to question anything that you don't understand or that looks amiss. We lost several important years that could have helped ease my son's life experiences. By no means am I simply rating out of anger, I just want to help bring awarness to newly diagnosed families as well as those families who may still be in the process of searching for the answers. My thoughts are with all the many families and friends who have been touched by Autism.
